The LLISA Officers and Board of Directors are proud to announce that the sluice gate repairs are officially complete. The sluice gate at the Long Lake Dam allows us to better regulate the water level of Long Lake, especially after heavy rains and flood situations. The old gate was over 40 years old, rusted to the point of falling apart, and in danger of complete failure. The entire gate was replaced this summer with a brand new stainless steel mechanism fabricated using the original drawings from 1972. The new stainless steel design will be much more resistant to corrosion and is intended to last much longer than the original. We have also added a railing to the walkway over the gate to improve safety.
While we may be a bit behind schedule in completing the project we are happy to share that our costs came in right on target. We have been able to pay for the entire project with funds raised through the generosity of our members and community sponsors.
It is especially important to acknowledge the work done by a few individuals specifically. Miranda Ripley coordinated the fund raising efforts (including the event at Jerry's Parkway last summer). Jim Miller managed the construction phase of the project from beginning to end. Finally, Ryan Ripley initiated this project, coordinated corporate contributors, and is responsible for all the dollars and cents. A word of thanks goes to these three.
The LLISA Board also wants to express a very special thank you to all the members and even some non-members who contributed to the project. Your continued generosity allows us to maintain a healthy and vibrant Long Lake that we can all enjoy. The commemorative plaque recognizing all gold, silver and bronze donors will be installed on the new railing for all to see.
