Lake Clean Up Day
LLISA is still in need of volunteers for the June 17, 2017 lake clean up. Specific needs include trash haulers on foot at the forest preserve, trash picker uppers on foot at the train tracks, and paddlers in the water to collect trash at the marsh and the tracks. Please contact Peg at [email protected] and indicate what task you'd like to volunteer for.
No Wake Buoys
The no wake buoys along the southeast shore were installed last weekend. Thanks to Jim Miller, Joe Popeck, RJ Ringa, Andrew Ringa, Ryan Ripley, and Miranda Ripley for making it fast and easy. Please travel at idle speed near these buoys.
Lake Management Plan
Joe and Becki Popeck have been busy working on the Lake Management Plan. They have been collecting all the available data and working to get the data into appropriate charts, graphs, maps, etc. Thanks for the work! Soon Joe will be reaching out to residents and stakeholders for input on the plan. Please consider contributing to this important project.
Sierra Club
Joe Popeck, RJ Ringa, and Ron Gurak have been meeting monthly with the local Sierra Club Chapter. These meetings are very collaborative and constructive. Please reach out if you would like to attend the next meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 PM. Sierra Club is very enthusiastic to engage in active lake management strategies and additional perspectives would be helpful.
Minnowologist
Speaking of Sierra Club, Jim Bland is on Long Lake today with Dr. Phil Willink from the Shedd Aquarium with their local guide, Joe Popeck. They are visiting several locations on the lake and Squaw Creek completing a minnow fish survey. Thanks Joe for all your help! This is very exciting opportunity for us to get more information about our fishery.
Baxter
No news on the Baxter front. We will send out information as it becomes available.
VLMP Data Collection
On May 14, 2017 Joe Popeck, Ron Gurak, Craig Kmichik, and RJ Ringa were trained by Alana Bartolai from the Lake County Health Department on the new water testing and sampling equipment. They will be out again taking water clarity and dissolved oxygen readings this Saturday morning. Data collection will continue through the summer and fall.
New Volunteers
Barb Meudt has volunteered to help coordinate our membership list. Barb is very organized and has great attention to detail. LLISA is very thankful for her help.
Shannon Gilinski has also volunteered his help. We are in the process of getting in touch with Shannon to discuss areas where he can contribute. Thank you for volunteering, Shannon!
